Three capacitors are connected as follows: 1.83 F capacitor and 4.53 F capacitor are connected in series, then that combination is connected in parallel with a capacitor of 8.77 F. What is the capacitance of the total combination?

This is the answer tab

Firstly, let us draw the circuit. It can be drawn as the following:

Capacitors have formulas which are the opposite of the ones for resistors. So, if we want to associate them in series, we need to use the formula we use for parallel resistors

For the series association we can then calculate:

C_1=(1.83*4.53)/(1.83+4.53)\approx1.30F

Then, in order to associate them in parallel, all we need to do is sum. So we get:

C=1.30+8.77=10.07F

Our answer is C = 10.07F
