Solution

Determine the percent increase in tuition costs:

To calculate the percentage increase:

First: work out the difference (increase) between the two numbers you are comparing.

Increase = New Number - Original Number

Then: divide the increase by the original number and multiply the answer by 100.

New cost = $46

Original cost = $36

\begin{gathered} I\text{ncrease= New cost - Original cost} \\ Increase\text{ = 46-36} \\ Increase=\text{ \$}10 \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} \text{ \% increase = }(10)/(36)*100 \\ =(1000)/(36) \\ =27.278 \\ \approx27.8\text{ \%} \end{gathered}

Therefore the percent increase in tuition costs = 27.8%
