The given equations are:

\begin{gathered} -10x+8y=-44\ldots\ldots(1) \\ 4x+8y=40\ldots\ldots\text{.}\mathrm{}(2) \end{gathered}

Subtract equation 1 from 2, we get,

\begin{gathered} 4x+10x+8y-8y=40+44 \\ 14x=84 \\ x=(84)/(14)=6 \end{gathered}

Now, substitute the value of x in equation 2, we get

\begin{gathered} 4*6+8y=40 \\ 8y=40-24=16 \\ y=(16)/(8)=2 \end{gathered}

Thus, the solution is x = 6 and y = 2
