Problem
3x+4y=23
5x+y=10
find x and y
Solution
For this case we can use the substitution method. First we can write the equation in the following way:
3x+4y=23 (1)
5x+y=10 (2)
If we solve y from equation (2) we got:
y = 10-5x (3)
If we replace (3) into equation (1) we got:
3x + 4(10-5x) =23
And we can solve for x on this way:
3x +40 -20x =23
20x -3x = 40-23
17x= 17
x=1
And now we can replace the value of x into y and we got:
y= 10 -5(1)= 10 - 5 = 5
