1. We are asked to evaluate 10^3. As ten is to the third power, we know that we have to times it by itself three times.

= 10*10*10

=1000

2. 0.079 * x = 7.9

When looking at 0.079, we can see that the last digit 9 is three places behind the decimal point.

When looking at 7.9, we can see that the nine is now only one place behind the decimal point. The decimal point has therefore been moved two spaces. In order to do this, we can times 0.079 by 100 as one hundred has two zeroes.

Therefore:

0.079*100 = 7.9
