Three tennis balls are packaged in a box. The box is 12.1 cm long, 3.5 cm wide, and 3.5 cm tall. Each ball is 3.3 cm in diameter. What is the approximate volume of the empty space in the box rounded to the nearest tenth? Use 3.14 = π. (volume of the box = length times width times height) SHOW YOUR WORK.

Answer:

134 cm^3 empty space

Explanation:

The box has a total volume of (12.1)(3.5)(3.5) = 191 cm^3

Each ball has a volume of (4/3)πr³

The ball's diameter is 3.3 cm, so it's radius is (3.3/2) or 1.65 cm

(4/3)(3.14)(1.65)³ = 18.8 cm^3

There are 3 balls, so they occupy 3*18.8 or 56.4 cm^3

Box volume - volume of 3 balls

191 cm^3 - 56.4 cm^3 = 134 cm^3

134 cm^3 is empty space in the box.
