Percentages of percentages

A

If there is a 10% discount, then the product will cost

100% - 10% = 90%

It says that there is another discount of 55% off. Then, from 90% it would cost

100% - 55% = 45%

In summary, the costumer will pay 90% of the product but with the second discount the costumer would pay 45% out of the 90% of the product.

We know that we can obtain the percentage of a number just by multiplying it by the percentage divided by 100. For example, in this case, we find the 45% of 90% just by multiplying 90% by

(45)/(100)=0.45

Then, 90% x 0.45 = 40.5%

This is: the costumer pays 40.5% out of the total.

B

We follow the same procedure as the previous part:

If there is a 20% discount, then the product will cost

100% - 20% = 80%

It has another discount of 25%. Then, from 80% it would cost:

100% - 25% = 75%

We multiply 80% by

(75)/(100)=0.75

Then, 80% x 0.75 = 60%

This is: the costumer pays 60% out of the total.

C

With a 45% discount, the costumer would pay

100% - 45% = 55%

This is: the costumer pays 55% out of the total.

Answer A: The costumer pays less money on the first case, then this is the discount which saves the buyer more money
