How can I calculate the probability that if a student is selected at random that he/she was absent for 6 sessions, less than 2 sessions and more than 7 sessions?

Solution

From the table;

Number of sessions absent 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Frequency 15 3 1 4 7 2 0 2 0 1 1

Probability = Number of required outcomes / Number of possible outcomes

(i) P( absent for 6 sessions) = 6/36 = 1/6

(ii) P(less than 2 session) = P(0 sessions) + P(1 sessions)

= 15/36 + 3/36

= 1/2

(iii) P(more than 7 sessions) = P(7 sessions) + P(8 sessions) + P(9 sessions) + P(10 sessions)

= 2/36 + 0/36 + 1/36 + 1/36

= 1/9
