The given terms are 10y and 5y^3

Like terms have the same variables and the power to which they are raised is the same.

a) They are not like terms because the variables are raised to different powers. y and y^3 have different powers

b) Since they are not like terms, they can't be combined.

An example of two terms that are like terms are 10y and 5y
