The amount of canvas needed is 420 square feet.

To solve this, lets calculate the area of the square that forms a and c; then calculate the area that forms a and b.

Since a and c forms a rectangle, the area of the rectangle is side times side. Then:

a\cdot b=15ft\cdot22ft=330ft^2

The area of a triangle is:

A_t=(h\cdot b)/(2)

Where h is the height of the triangle (a in this case) and b the base of the triangle (also b, in this case). Then:

(a\cdot b)/(2)=(15ft\cdot12ft)/(2)=90ft^2

Now just add the two areas:

330ft^2+90ft^2=420ft^2
