Scores on a dental anxiety range from 0 (no anxiety) to 20 (extreme anxiety). The scores are normally distributed with a mean of 11 and a standard deviation of 4. Find the z-score for the score of 17 on this dental anxiety scale. Round to the nearest hundredth.

For a normal distribution, we have the mean μ and the standard deviation σ:


\begin{gathered} \mu=11 \\ \sigma=4 \end{gathered}

The z-score can be calculated using the formula:


Z=(X-\mu)/(\sigma)

Where X is a score from the normal distribution. For X = 17, we have:


\begin{gathered} Z=(17-11)/(4)=(6)/(4) \\ \\ \therefore Z=1.5 \end{gathered}
