Probability

Dropping an object into the large rectangle represents the 100% probable event. Staying in the small rectangle has a probability that can be calculated by comparing the relative areas of the rectangles.

Area of the large rectangle:

A1 = 9 in * 10 in = 90 square in

Area of the small rectangle:

A2 = 4 in * 5 in = 20 square in

The required probability is:

p=(20)/(90)=(2)/(9)

Calculating:

p = 0.2222

p = 22.22%
