Step 1 - What is a period?

There are two main divisions in the periodic table: groups and periods. Groups are vertically organized, whereas periods are horizontally organized.

As we can see in the picture bellow, families are named by numbers ranging from 1 to 18. Periods are named by numbers as well, going from 1 to 7.

Step 2 - Locating Boron in the periodic table

Boron has atomic number 5. It is located in the 13th group and 2nd period.
