I found a sweatshirt for $20 but then saw it was 10% off! When I was checking out there was a 1.5% sales tax. What is the total?

First, we need to find the discount. 10% of $20 is computed as follows:

20\text{ \$}\cdot(10)/(100)=2\text{ \$}

Applying the discount, the price is $20 - $2 = $18

In taxes, you have to pay 1.5% of the cost, that is,

18\text{ \$}\cdot(1.5)/(100)=0.27\text{ \$}

Therefore, the total cost is $18 + $0.27 = $18.27
