A store offers a discount of 40% off any one regular price item. Employees also get 10% off any purchases. In which order should the discounts apply so that the employee plays the least amount.

Let us take a price of 100.

So, let us now consider the order availing 40% off first then 10 %,

\begin{gathered} 100*(40)/(100)=40\text{ off} \\ \text{Amount =100-40=60} \\ Taking10off,60*(10)/(100)=6 \\ \text{Amount = 60-6=54} \\ \end{gathered}

Now considering the other order.

\begin{gathered} 100*(10)/(100)=10 \\ \text{amount = 100-10=90} \\ 40\text{ \% off , } \\ 90*(40)/(100)=36 \\ \text{Amount = 90-36}=54 \end{gathered}

Both ways are equal.
