y = x+2 ------------ equation 1

y = 3x -2 ------------ equation 2

in the first equation y = x +2

in the second equation y = 3x -2

this mean equation 1 = equation 2

then we can equate the two together to get one of the variable

remember, we have to unknown variables which are x and y, so we need to isolate y to get x

x + 2 = 3x -2

let collect the like terms

x - 3x = -2 -2

let us factorize out x on the right hand side of the equation

x(1 - 3) = -4

x(-2) = -4

-2x = -4

divide both sides by -2

-2x/-2 = -4/-2

x = 2

to find y put x in any of the above equations

let us use equation one

y = 2 + 2

y = 4

the answers are x = 2 and y =4
