Mathematically: Plug the points into this equation

y(2) - y(1) / x(2) - x(1)

If you do this, it will be -2- 4 / 1 - -1, which equals -6/2. You can simplify this to -3 and there you go.

Graphically: Start on the point (-1,4) and count on the graph until you get to (1,-2) That will be down six units and right two units. This can be written as -6/2, which of course, can be simplified to -3.
