The equation that relates the number of apples that Alice got (A) with the number of apples that Claire got (C) is given by the equation:

C = 3 A (three times A)

Then the RATIO of Alice's apples over Claire's apples is:

A / C

and since we have an expression for (C) in the equation we built: (C = 3 A), we can use it to replace C in the denominator:

A / C = A / (3 A)

and now we can simplify the factors A in numerator and denominator and end up with:

Then the RATIO of Alice's apples over Claire's apples is: 1 / 3 (one over three).

For every apple Alice has, Claire has THREE.
