Wild animals around the world wanted to have an athletic competition, but no one let them get on a plane. They decided to simply measure how far each animal could run in one minute and send you the results so you can decide which is the winner.animalCougarantelopeHarekangarooostrichcoyotedistance traveled1,408 yardsI mile49,632inches1,073 meters115 kilometers3,773 feet. 1. Which animal ran the longest distance? 2. What position did each animal occupy in the classification?

To solve the exercise, you can first convert all the distances traveled by the animals to the same unit, for example to meters.

To do the unit conversion you can use the rule of three, like this

*Cougar

\begin{gathered} 1\text{ m}\rightarrow1.094\text{ yd} \\ x\text{ m}\rightarrow1,408\text{ yd} \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} x=\frac{1,408yd\text{ }\ast1m}{1.094} \\ x=1287m \end{gathered}

*Antelope

1\text{ mi}\rightarrow1609\text{ m}

*Hare

\begin{gathered} 1\text{ m}\rightarrow39.37\text{ in} \\ x\text{ m}\rightarrow49,632\text{ in} \\ x=\frac{49632\text{ in }\ast\text{ 1m}}{39.37\text{ in}} \\ x=1260.7m \end{gathered}

*Ostrich

\begin{gathered} 1\text{ km}\rightarrow1000\text{ m} \\ 1.15\text{ Km}\rightarrow x\text{ m} \\ x=\frac{1.15\text{ Km }\cdot1000\text{ m}}{1\text{ Km}} \\ x=1150\text{ m} \end{gathered}

*Coyote

\begin{gathered} 1\text{ m}\rightarrow3.281\text{ ft} \\ x\text{ m}\rightarrow3,773\text{ ft} \\ x=\frac{3773\text{ ft}\ast1m}{3.281\text{ ft}} \\ x=1150.01m \end{gathered}

Now, the distances that the animals traveled, in meters, are

Cougar: 1287 m

Antelope: 1609 m

Hare: 1260.7 m

Kangaroo: 1073 m

Ostrich: 1150m

Coyote: 1150.01m

Sorting the animals from least to greatest distance traveled

Kangaroo: 1073 m

Coyote: 1150.01m

Ostrich: 1150m

Hare: 1260.7 m

Cougar: 1287 m

Antelope: 1609 m

Therefore, the animal that ran the longest was the antelope.

And the positions that each animal occupied in the classification is:

1) Antelope: 1609 m

2) Cougar: 1287 m

3) Hare: 1260.7 m

4) Ostrich: 1150m

5) Coyote: 1150m

6) Kangaroo: 1073 m

Where the first place is held by the animal that traveled the most distance.
