Solution:

Part A:

A company wants to decrease its energy use by 15%

Their current bill is $2,204

The new bill if they are successful will be;

\begin{gathered} \text{Decrement}=15\text{ \% of \$2,204} \\ =(15)/(100)*2204 \\ =\text{ \$330.60} \\ \\ \text{Hence, the decrease n}eeded\text{ is \$330.60} \\ \\ \text{The new bill therefore, will be,} \\ \text{New bill = current bill - decrement} \\ \text{New bill = \$2204-\$330.60} \\ \text{New bill = \$1873.40} \end{gathered}

Therefore, their new bill will be $1873.40

Part B:

If their next bill is $1,741 a month, then the company was successful because they succeeded in reducing the energy use even lower than the 15% reduction they intended. They intended a new bill of $1,873.40 and got lesser.

Hence, they were successful.

The percentage decrease from the current bill is;

\begin{gathered} \text{Decrease}=\text{ \$2204-\$1741} \\ \text{Decrease}=\text{ \$463} \\ \\ Percentage\text{ decrease =}\frac{decrease}{\text{current or original bill}}*100\text{ \%} \\ Percentage\text{ decrease =}(463)/(2204)*100\text{ \%} \\ Percentage\text{ decrease =}21.007\text{ \%} \\ Percentage\text{ decrease =}21.01\text{ \%} \end{gathered}

Therefore, the percentage decrease from the current bill is 21.01 %
