Answer:
Jason, i don't have much time because I'm very tired and i have to go to bed but this a good example of homeostasis.
Imagine that the cell is exposed to some kind of stressor such as extremes of temperature, exposure to toxins, or mechanical damage. The chain reactions will be
- Disruption or the formation of cell membrane blebs
- Alteration of protein synthesis and accumulation of altered proteins in the ER
- Alteration of the chromatin of the chromosomes inside the nucleus and DNA damage
- Alteration of the permeability of organelles such as mitochondria with consequent alterations in metabolism
- Decrease in ATP levels and increase in cytoplasmic calcium level
The combination of all this can lead the cell to death but it can respond in various ways:
- the cell can decrease protein synthesis and induce the transcription of specific stress-sensitive chromosomal genes that correct altered proteins
- It can respond to DNA damage by stopping replication and trying to repair it
- If it cannot survive it can commit suifcide so as not to harm other cells
