The area of the border is 486 square inches

Here, we want to get the area of the border

From the question, we are told that the border is 3 inches wide

What this mean is that, the border will be on all four sides of the rectangle, thereby increasing the width of the rectangle and the length of the rectangle

So, the width of the rectangle including the border will be 45 + 6 = 51 inches

The length of the rectangle including the border will be 30 + 6 = 36 inches

So, to calculate the area of the border, we are going to make a subtraction

We will subtract the area of the rectangle only, from the area of the rectangle and the border

Mathematically, at any point in time, the area of a rectangle is the product of its length and its width

So, the area of the border will be;

\begin{gathered} (51*36)\text{ - (30}*45) \\ =\text{ 1836-1350} \\ =\text{ 486 square inches} \end{gathered}
