It was very simple. He asked questions. He always knew where the next question was going to lead the person answering. I'm sure occasionally he was surprised, because he had very clever students (Plato for one -- who himself was a great philosopher).

Many people are try to use the Socratic method. They are not always very good at it. The problem is that the question has to be subtle enough that the student can't see the answer until it is "too late," meaning that he realizes that he has been lead to the answer.
