The length of a rectangle is 11 in greater than the width. The area is 26 in^2. Find the length and the width

We have the following:

L = 11 + W

W

A = L*W

A = 26

replacing:


\begin{gathered} A=(11+W)\cdot W \\ 26=11\cdot W+W^2 \\ W^2+11\cdot W-26=0 \\ (W+13)\cdot(W-2)=0 \\ W+13=0\Rightarrow W=-13 \\ W-2=0\Rightarrow W=2 \end{gathered}

Therefore, W is 2 in, replacing:

L = W + 11

L = 2 + 11

L = 13 in

The answer is the length is 13 in and width is 2 in
