The independization of Spanish colonies in South America and most of them ended in Dictatorships because of the lack of democracy.

For example, in the second Cuban revolution (the one of 1959), one of the most common hooks to attract people to the guerrilla was the patriotism.

Cuba ended up with the largest dictatorship of history and years later with its alliance to the Sovietic Union, they almost triggered the third world war with the missile crisis. :)
