Shoes: $22

Jacket: $16

Divide 38 by 2, which is 19

take away half of 6, which is 3.

Take 3 from 19, resulting in 16 which is your jacket

Add 3 to 19, resulting in 22 which are your shoes

Equation 1: x + y = $38

Equation 2: x = y + $6

Replace x in the first equation with the second equation :

y + 6 + y = 38

Simplify:

2y + 6 = 38

Subtract 6 from both sides:

2y = 32

Divide both sides by 2:

Y = 16

Now you know y, the cost of the jacket is $16

The shoes were $6 more so 15 + 6 = $22

Jacket cost $16

Shoes cost $22
