We have:

$15 a day

17 cents per mile = $0.17

Total charge = $50.02

Then, let x miles was it driven.

We have the following equation:

15+0.17x=50.02

Next, solve for x

\begin{gathered} 15+0.17x-15=50.02-15 \\ 0.17x=35.02 \\ (0.17x)/(0.17)=(35.02)/(0.17) \\ x=206 \end{gathered}

Answer: they drove 206 miles
