on a map the.scale shown is 1 inch : 3 miles. if an island is .5 square inches on the map, what is the actual area of the.island. I know the answer, but I am wondering if I can get an explanation as to how to get to that answer

On the graph, 1 inch is equivalent to 3 miles and area is product of two sides. So,


\begin{gathered} 1\text{ inch}*1\text{ inch =3 miles}*3\text{ miles} \\ 1inch^2=9miles^2 \end{gathered}

So 1 square inch is equivalent to 9 square miles.

Determine the area of the island interms of square miles.
