Are extremely long cells when compared to other cells in the body: it´s dimensions are reached thanks to the fusion of several hundred undifferentiated muscle cells called myoblasts and their subsequent elongation.

Have striations: its most outstanding characteristic: the presence of a succession of light and dark striae, in the central sector of its sarcoplasm. The striae appear perpendicular to the long axis of the myocyte. They are formed by alternating light and dark areas within each myofibril.
