Algebraically, 'eight times a number' is written 8x; on the other hand, 'three subtracted from eight times a number' is 8x-3. Therefore, the whole expression is

8x-3=85

The answer to part A) is 8x-3=85

B) Solving the equation in part A) for x,

\begin{gathered} \Rightarrow8x=85+3=88 \\ \Rightarrow x=(88)/(8)=11 \\ \Rightarrow x=11 \end{gathered}

The answer to part B) is x=11.
