Explanation:

For the pair to be a solution to the equation, x = -2 must lead to y = 8, o =r vice versa. This leads to being able to solve it two ways either through x or through y.

I'll solve it through x:

y = -2x - 1

with x = -2

y = -2 * - 2 - 1

y = 4 - 1

y = 3

Since y = 3, when x = -2 the pair (-2,8) is not a pair to the solution of the equation.

PS: You can double check by solving through y and you'll find x = -4.5
