They see everything by using research and looking back into timelines and read info in books or on computers. They study by looking for things that look unusual

Answer:

Sometimes they use a map or they do some research on the place/area they are looking into. They could also go the the area/place and do some self research they're and take some sample of what the rocks and plants are like.
