Dogs are loyal, friendly, and caring. They will stick by your side no matter what. A dog will greet you when you come home with a happy bark and a joyfully wagging tail. Dogs can tell when you are feeling upset or afraid. Dogs can be a comfort in times of sadness or loss and a can lift spirits higher in times of celebration and happiness. A dog can be your mighty defender and closest friend. It’s no accident that dogs are known as “man’s best friend.” Dogs are truly the best pet anyone could desire. One reason dogs make great pets is that dogs are the perfect friends. Having a dog is like having a friend that will never leave, betray or gossip behind your back. Dogs are very loyal and devoted to their owners. Dogs return the love and care their owners feel for them. Owners will find endless pleasure in the company of their dogs. According to Purina’s article “Why dogs make good pets,” “For dog owners, nothing could be more enjoyable than a long walk with their best friend on a fresh, spring morning; seeing the joy on their faces when it comes to playtime in the local park; or just relaxing at home in each other’s company. It is certainly true that all the love you put in, a dog will give you back ten-fold.” Dogs are endless resources of affection. No matter what their owner has achieved during the day or how successfully he has been at work, his dog will greet him with a joyful welcome. No dog will ever reject his owner for failing a test, bouncing a check or missing a big promotion at work. According to the article “How Dogs Help Depression”, “Pets are uncomplicated - they don't have their own agendas and they love you unconditionally” (Dogsfordepression.org). Dogs are wonderful for spreading positive feelings of love and acceptance to their owners. Surely, a dog owner is a happier person because of his dog. Additionally, dogs are good at chasing away negative feelings as well. Whenever sadness and depression are felt, dogs are the best at cheering spirits. The article further states, “Dogs can help symptoms of depression because they are pack animals and instinctively form close bonds with other members of

their ‘pack’ or family. By their very nature, they will help provide emotional support to other members of their pack by being loyal and affectionate companions.” Dogs will view their owners as part of the family that they want to protect and defend. That is why they make such great companions and friends; they will treat you like family. In addition to being great for companionship, Dogs are also the perfect pet for helping with physical and mental health. Dogs can help their owners through touch emotional times by helping owners cope with sadness. “Dog ownership can help people to recover from personal trauma, such as bereavement” (“Why dogs make good pets”). When suffering from the loss of a loved one, there is nothing more beneficial than having the unconditional loyalty and affection of a four-footed, furry friend to comfort his grieving owner. Having a dog has also been helpful to people suffering from other difficulties. “Dog ownership helps people with mental illness feel calmer” (“Why dogs make good pets”). A dog is such a calming force that even illnesses that have taken root in the brain can be calmed by canine companionship. Dogs are a great benefit to mental health. That is just the benefit owning a dog can have. In addition to the benefit of mental comfort and health, dog owners experience other health benefits from their pets. “Dog owners generally have a more robust immune system, helping them stave off illness. In fact, dog owners visit the doctor less frequently and are less likely to be on medication”.
