A 48 cm wire is to cut into two pieces. One piece must be cut 10 com longer than the shorter piece. How long should each peice be?

Explanation:

short - S

long - L

L=10+S

L+S = 48

SINCE L=10+S

10+S+S=48

10+2S=48

2S=48-10

S=38/2=19

SHORT=19CM

LONG=10+S=10+19=39CM
