The vertical axis corresponds to the pressure of a substance, while the horizontal axis corresponds to the temperature. The solid is the substance which contains particles of strong intermolecular force and compaction, typically ionic at a certain temperature, the liquid is the substance which contains relatively compact molecules, however lacks a particular arrangement. The gaseous substance is caused by particles with weak intermolecular forces, causing particle movement and collision with no arrangement whatsoever. The triple point as shown in the diagram, is the phrase on a diagram where each substance: solid, liquid and gas coexist. The critical point is the phase at which the/a substance is indistinguishable between liquid and gaseous states. A substance or elements state is highly dependent on its environment and it’s temperature, of which ultimately affects its kinetic energy within its particles. This is what the graph portrays and represents.
