Answer:

x = 8, y = 4

This can also be written as an ordered pair: (8, 4)

Explanation:

First, set up a system of equations:

x + y = 12, $2x + $6y = $40

The first equation shows that there are a total of 12 tickets, and the other shows that the total of money for all the tickets adds to $40.

Then, solve by elimination by subtracting twice the first equation from the second to isolate y:

2x + 6y = 40

- (2x + 2y = 24)

0 + 4y = 16

And now we can solve for y:

4y = 16

y = 4

Then, put this back into the original equation to solve for x:

x + y = 12

x + 4 = 12

x = 8
