African American soldiers played a large role in the Union army, and their contribution was a significant factor in the Union's eventual victory.
The first conflict that African American soldiers played a large role in was the First Battle of Bull Run (1861). The Union army was outmatched and outnumbered by the Confederate forces, and African American troops were instrumental in helping to prevent a complete Union rout.
African American soldiers also fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg (1862), where they displayed great courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Although the Union lost the battle, the courageous stand of the African American troops earned them the respect of their fellow soldiers and officers.
The most famous engagement involving African American troops was the Battle of Gettysburg (1863). Here, the Union army, bolstered by African American troops, defeated the Confederate forces in a pivotal engagement that turned the tide of the war in favor of the Union.
After Gettysburg, African American soldiers continued to play an important role in many other engagements, including Sherman's March to the Sea (1864) and Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse (1865). By the end of the war, African Americans had proved their worth as soldiers, and their contributions played a significant role in ensuring Union victory.
