PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Directions: Select two “This I Believe” Essays under the “explore” tab on the This I Believe (http://thisibelieve.org/) website to analyze closely. Use the prompts below to help you think deeply about the essays you select. You must write thoughtful, well-developed responses to each prompt.
Title: What is the name of the essay? How did the title draw you in? How is it connected to the topic of the essay?
Speaker: Give the name AND some info about the author. Age? Location? Profession?
Purpose: What did the author hope to do with this piece of writing? Why did he/she write it? What is the message? If you read an essay about someone’s experience in a fantasy football league, the purpose is NOT “to tell us about fantasy football”. The purpose might be something like this “The writer shared this essay to help the haters understand that although the league is fantasy, the entertainment is real.”
Structure: This is a paragraph-by paragraph breakdown of what the author wrote about. Briefly explain the purpose of each paragraph.
Tone and Evidence: What is the author’s attitude? Provide a direct quote as evidence to support your opinion of the author’s tone.
Grabber: Something made you read this essay. Chances are, you read the title, then the first sentence or two… What did the writer do in the first few sentences that caused you to stick with this essay?
Conclusion: How does the essay as a whole build to this point? How does the writer wrap it all up? Are there any connections to the introduction in this paragraph? Are there any references to parts of the previous paragraphs?
