d + 3

6 + 3

Explanation:

$2.85 = 285 cents

25q + 10d = 285

d + 3 = q

Substitution:

25(d+3)+10d = 285

25d+75+10d = 285

35d = 285 - 75

35d = 210

d = 210/35

d = 6

q = 6+3=9
