Early on, ancient Egyptians mainly depended on agriculture and hunting to sustain themselves. Ancient Egyptians had no idea about long-distance trade. Initially, they used the Nile River only as a natural resource to help with agriculture. However, Egyptians later began using the river as a source of transportation. Ancient Egyptians no longer had to depend on agriculture as their only means of livelihood.
