Consider a square and divide it into four equal parts. Each part of the square is called as a quarter.

A quarter of a square is one out of four of its equal parts . In a square there are four quarters or four fourths in a whole.

From the figure, the shaded portion represents one quarter of the square i.e.,
(1)/(4) th of a square.
