the hour hand (the short one) takes 60 minutes/an hour to go around.
the minute hand (the longer one) takes a minute to go around
Since the hour hand takes longer to go around, it has the longest period :)

The short hand shows the hours and is called the hour hand. The long hand shows the minutes and is called the minute hand. The face of the clock is called the dial.

The hour hand (the shortest) has the longest period. This is because the thin long hand that goes around quickly is seconds, seconds lead into minutes (60 seconds is 1 minute). The minute hand is the second longest period (60 minutes is an hour). This leaves the hour hand, which takes the longest.
