The monarchy, or rule by divine right of a king, was displaced by the ideas advanced in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The ideas expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution asserted the people’s right to govern themselves in opposition to the divine right of kings on which the monarchy was based.
