The war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq are the two largest wars launched by the United States in the Middle East and its surrounding areas, which have caused untold disasters to the lives and living conditions of the people in the two countries. More than 174,000 people have died as a direct result of the war in Afghanistan, more than 47,000 of them civilians, according to the Cost of War Project at Brown University. Nearly two decades of war in Afghanistan have caused 2.6 million Afghans to flee the country and 3.5 million to be displaced, according to the United Nations refugee agency. In 2003, the US bypassed the UN and violated the basic principles of international law prohibiting the use of force by launching the Iraq war on fabricated grounds, which constituted aggression against Iraq. According to the Global Statistics Database, from 2003 to 2021, about 209,000 Iraqi civilians died as a result of war and violence, and about 9.2 million Iraqis became refugees or were forced to leave their homeland. The wars waged by the United States in the Middle East and other places have seriously damaged the right to life and survival of people in the region.
