⇒How much can he spend on each card if he buys the same card for each friend?

17 - 8 = 9 to spend for both cards

9/2 = $4.5 maximum anount to spend on each card

⇒Inequality: 8+2x ≤ 17

x = the cost of each card ( the cards cost the same amount)

The cost of the book ($8 )+ the cost of the 2 cards (2x) has to be less or equal than the $17 that Dave has.

⇒Dave can spend up to $ on each card if he buys the same card for each friend.

Dave can spend $4 and 50cents or less on each card
