Last year, a baseball team paid $20 per bat and $12 per glove, spending a total of $1040. This year, the prices went up to $25 per bat and $16 per glove. The team spent $1350 to purchase the same amount of equipment as last year. How many bats did the team purchase each year?

Answer:

22

Explanation:

x = number of bats bought

y = number of gloves bought

20x + 12y = 1040

25x + 16y = 1350

multiply equation 1 by 4 and equation 2 by 3 and then subtract equation 2 from equation 1 :

80x + 48y = 4160

- 75x - 48y = -4050

-----------------------------

5x + 0 = 110

5x = 110

x = 22

just in case also to check how many gloves were bought :

20x + 12y = 1040

20×22 + 12y = 1040

440 + 12y = 1040

12y = 600

y = 50

so, 50 gloves were bought.
