y=8

Explanation:

let the greater number be x and the smaller number be y.

Now,

from first condition,

x = y + 5 --------1

from second condition,

x + y = 21

or, x = 21 - y --------2

from equation 1 and 2,

y + 5 = 21 - y

or, 2y = 16

y = 8

now,

putting the value of y in equation 1

x = 8 + 5

= 13
