Given that R is the midpoint of QS , then

RS = QR , that is

5x = 3x + 6 ( subtract 3x from both sides )

2x = 6 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 3

Then

QS = QR + RS

= 3x + 6 + 5x

= 8x + 6

= 8(3) + 6

= 24 + 6

= 30

Similarly

QR = RS , that is

6x - 9 = 2x - 1 ( subtract 2x from both sides )

4x - 9 = - 1 ( add 9 to both sides )

4x = 8 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x = 2

Then

QS = QR + RS

= 6x - 9 + 2x - 1

= 8x - 10

= 8(2) - 10

= 16 - 10

= 6
