Liquid

  1. The intermolecular attractive forces are not as strong as solids.
  2. The attractive forces are also not strong enough to keep neighbouring molecules in a fixed position. So the molecules are free to move over neighbouring.

Solid

  1. The intermolecular forces between neighboring molecules are strong enough to keep them locked in position.
  2. Due to the strong intermolecular forces between neighboring molecules, solids are rigid.
