A jar contains only pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. There are 16 pennies, 11 dimes, and 20 quarters. The rest of the coins are nickels. There are 74 coins in all. How many of the coins are not nickels? If n represents the number of nickels in the jar, what equation could you use to find n?

Answer: 23n (nickels)

16p + 11d + 20q = 47x

x = number of coins that aren't nickels

y = number of coins in all

n = nickels

so there are 74 coins in all

70y - 47x = 23n

there are 23 nickels

lets check: 23n + 16p + 11d + 20q = 70y
